We decided to step away from traditional
cinema for our next Robot of the Week. We needed a special robot, one that only our Japanese brethren
could provide for us. While Mechagodzilla is one of the biggest killer robots around, Alita is one of
the smallest. Her petite form and absolutely kawaii face can lull her enemy into a fall sense of
security. A security that doesn't last long, as Alita is quite deadly. Beauty, brains, and deadly
Panzer Kunst moves. We love that in a woman.

Alita (Gally in Japan) has no memory of her
past. When we first meet her she is nothing but a broken wreck dumped in the Junkyard by Tiphares (Salem
in Japan). Doc Ido finds her and repairs her broken body back at his robotics shop. At first, Alita is
content to live out her days with Ido, until she realizes she has the inate knowledge of the Panzer Kunst,
the most powerful cyborg fighting technique ever developed. Becoming a bounty hunter for the Factory, Alita's
life becomes more and more bloody, until the lives of millions lie in her hands.
"Gunnm" (pronounced "GAHN-mu") meaning "Gun Dream"
in Japanese was a manga series started in 1991 by Yukito Kishiro. It was published in Shueisha's "Business Jump"
until 1995 when the series ended after 85 "fights." In 1993 there was a very short OVA series (only 2 episodes)
that covered the first two tankoubons (trade-paperbacks). Although the manga and anime were short-lived, the
series is still very popular and the manga and anime can both be found easily in the states.
